Bayt Dakira
Bayt Dakira or the House of Memory is a Jewish museum located in the heart of the medina of the city of Essaouira, Morocco.
The museum aims to be a spiritual space dedicated to the memory of the city’s Jewish community. It plays an important role in preserving and promoting this Jewish-Moroccan memory. The museum also seeks, through its exhibition of objects, to preserve the memory of the Jewish community.
The museum also seeks, through its exhibition of rare objects, texts and photographs, to show the coexistence between the city’s Muslims and Jews. Thus, visitors to the museum are greeted with the phrase “Shalom Aleykoum, Salam Lekoulam,” a mix of Arabic and Hebrew to illustrate the complicit closeness between Jews and Muslims.
The museum includes the Simon Attia Synagogue and the Haïm and Célia Zafrani Research Center for the history of relations between Judaism and Islam.
